From the Architect: Chestnut Home is situated in Vale Flor, within the north of Portugal, a rural space densely occupied by chestnut and oak bushes, which prolong on a slope going through east-south with the Serra da Marofa ridge as background. The primary go to to the positioning revealed a big secular chestnut tree that turned the motto for the event of the home undertaking. Beneath this chestnut tree, invoking the idea of the genius loci, a ‚shelter‘ home was designed: the Chestnut Home.

„The intervention sought to be as least intrusive as attainable, conserving the unique character of the land virtually untouched and with out affecting the shelter tree round which the home is implanted, molding itself to its imposing morphology and merging with the panorama.

„The development is product of a light-weight and over-elevated construction, whose morphology and materiality relate to the terrain in probably the most harmonious manner attainable with out affecting the chestnut roots.

„The design of the constructing and the selection of supplies adjust to sustainability ideas, in addition to power and low-carbon options that are typically sustainable as a way to decrease the environmental influence of the development. All of the construction is in licensed wooden, lined with oriented strand board (OSB) and cork panels with thermal and acoustic traits. Within the exterior each the facades, roof, and deck are coated with black-painted wooden. This materials respects the pure properties of wooden, and ensures its sturdiness and dimensional stability. The partitions and ceiling, in addition to the furnishings, are product of birch plywood, which provides a heat and welcoming ambiance to the inside of the home.

„The proper geometry of two related cubes is damaged and tensioned by the tree cover and its branches, opening the constructing in direction of the tree cover, which amplifies the presence of the panorama. On the elevations there are small and huge openings that relate with the sundial or with the panorama. Massive openings join the inside area with nature, whereas small openings, hid by the outer masking of darkened modified wooden, assure privateness in inside areas.

„In a important reflection on residing, the intention was to rework the minimal area into consolation and sustainability. The inside group of the home is designed in operate of minimal area that permits to reduce the exterior volumetry, and to make sure a purposeful and comfy use of the interior areas. The home accommodates, in a single area, the comfort and kitchen areas, the residing space, and the sleeping area with the potential of inserting an additional mattress on a mezzanine.

„The residing space is deeply related with the outer space by way of a big window that extends the inside area outdoors and onto the wood deck platform, enhancing a dilution of the inside/exterior border and albeit permitting out of doors residing. There is no such thing as a lounge, however there’s a mediation area between the inside and the outside as a result of the lounge is underneath the chestnut cover.

„The Chestnut Home reveals all year long the adjustments of the season and the climate. It acts as a barometer, which displays the mutations of nature in its textures and colours, which is, concurrently, an extension of nature and of our physique. It’s the altering sport of nature that determines the lifetime of the inhabitant. In contrast to the idyllic picture of the panorama as a hard and fast body of time, the design of this home takes into consideration the unstable and the unpredictable, in search of to specific an structure in shut symbiosis with the encompassing panorama.“
